SAN ANTONIO (SANTIAGO)
San Antonio, Chile was founded in 1894, and it is the busiest port city on the western coast of South America. It’s one of Chile’s major seafood trading hubs, and it’s your gateway to Santiago.
San Antonio itself has a handful of travel opportunities including the Paseo Bellamar boardwalk, a shopping mall, a fish market, and the Municipal Museum of Natural Sciences and Archeology. However, if you want to experience the heart of Chile, travel 70mi/110km to the nation’s capital: Santiago.
Santiago is a city of 7 million people, and it’s known for its beautiful architecture and vibrant street art. You could easily spend a month in Santiago and still have more to see. But the most popular tourist sights you can hit in one day include the Plaza de Armas Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Museum of Fine Arts, Constitution Plaza, and Mercado Central. Curious in seeing the city from above? Head up to Cerro San Cristóbal via taxi, funicular, cable car, or foot for sweeping views. Another option is riding up to the observation deck of the Costanera Sky Tower.
If wandering is more your style that specific sightseeing, you’re in luck. Santiago is comprised of distinct neighborhoods that are perfect for roaming. The most well-known is Barrio Brazil, which has bohemian indie vibes with small markets, quaint cafes, and art everywhere.
Already been to Santiago? Head 57mi/92km up the coast from San Antonio to Valparaiso. The city has an unapparelled art scene with bright street art and graffiti coating the buildings. Enjoy cheap food, quirky shops, well curated galleries, and a ride up the funicular for beautiful views. For a completely different pace, take a quick jaunt north to Vina del Mar. Vina del Mar has tree lined boulevards, stately palaces, and expansive parks, earning it the nickname “Garden City.”
