PUERTO MONTT
Puerto Montt is the capital of the Los Lagos region of Chile. It’s a popular gateway to Chile’s glacial lakes and national parks, and its German influence gives the city a unique charm.
A popular activity in Puerto Montt is a stroll along the waterfront promenade. It features a series of statues, notably the giant sculpture “Couple Sitting on the Shore” and a series of busts called “The Heroes of Chile.” It’ll lead you past the Plaza de Armas and to a sizeable mall, which is perfect for picking up any items you may need.
Continuing along the other direction, you’ll get to Angelmo, which is famous for its craft and fish markets. You’ll find all types of locally made items ranging from sweaters to magnets. If you’ve walked up an appetite, enjoy the catch of the day at one of the restaurants on stilts.
For a nature-focused day, head to Lake Llanquihue. It’s the second largest lake in Chile, and you can see snow-capped peaks of two volcanoes in the background. A great launch point for enjoying Lake Llanquihue is the town of Puerto Varas, which is 12mi/20km from Puerto Montt. Puerto Varas is known for its German architecture and food, and it’s a popular stop for backpackers exploring Patagonia. Another charming German-inspired town on the banks of Lake Llanquihue is Frutillar, which is 16mi/26 km north of Puerto Varas.
Other travel opportunities out of Puerto Montt include Fly Fishing on the Maullin River, a trip to Petrohué Falls for spectacular views of the volcano Osorno, or a visit to Alerce Andino National park for hiking, kayaking, or birdwatching.
And one final note for fellow foodies…. Puerto Montt is the salmon capital of Chile! Don’t miss the chance to try out some fresh catches!
