AGADIR, MOROCCO
Agadir is a city along Morocco’s southern Atlantic coast. In 1960, the entire city was destroyed by an earthquake, and has since been built up to be a popular holiday destination with expansive beaches, top notch golf courses, and plenty of bars and restaurants.
The industrial port area is 3.5mi/5.8km away from the downtown area, which is a 10-15 minute drive.
Once in Agadir, a must-see stop is Souk al Had- the largest souk in the region with over 6,000 stalls. You’ll find everything from pajamas to watermelon, and it’s a great place to enjoy local culture while picking up some souvenirs along the way. For more shopping opportunities, head over to the Agadir Marina. This new area has a cool, laid-back vibe with a lovely seaside promenade lined with upscale retail and dining options. Fancy a dip? Head to Agadir Beach to enjoy fun in the sun and the white-golden sand beach.
Curious about what Agadir was like before the earthquake? Pay a visit to the Memories of Agadir, which is a museum dedicated to the history of the city. And don’t miss the Amazigh Heritage Museum, which pays homage to the Berber* heritage of the region.
*Berber is a name given to ethnic groups that have similar lingual, cultural, political, and economic traditions. Many view “Berber” as a derogatory term, and groups refer to themselves as Imazighen (Amazigh in singular form), which means “free men.”
Agadir is a popular holiday destination in Morocco for a reason, and you’re sure to enjoy the beautiful vistas and laid-back vibes.
